Quick Summary
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Network Contracting Office 8, intends to place a limited sources order for Bioventus ultrasonic surgical handpieces. This action is justified under FAR 8.405-6(b) and FAR 6.302-1, as these are proprietary components for the Bioventus neXus system, and Melling Medical is identified as the sole authorized federal SDVOSB distributor. This is a Special Notice, not a solicitation, and the Government does not intend to compete the requirement. However, interested parties may submit capability statements by April 16, 2026, at 10:00 AM EDT.
Scope of Requirement
The VA requires Bioventus ultrasonic surgical handpieces as direct replacements for units used with the existing Bioventus neXus system. These handpieces are critical for integration with the neXus platform's proprietary interface and compatibility with existing consumables.
Contract & Timeline
- Type: Special Notice (Limited Sources Order)
- Period of Performance: 60 Days After Receipt of Order (ARO)
- Set-Aside: Not applicable for this limited sources notice; Melling Medical is an authorized SDVOSB distributor.
- Capability Statement Deadline: April 16, 2026, 10:00 AM EDT
- Published Date: June 4, 2026
Justification & Evaluation
This limited sources action is justified because the Bioventus handpieces are the only ones compatible with the neXus system, and Melling Medical is the sole authorized federal SDVOSB distributor. A Sole Source Justification has been approved. While the Government does not intend to compete this requirement, it will review capability statements from alternative sources providing clear and convincing evidence that they can meet the specialized needs. Submission of a capability statement does not obligate the Government to conduct a competitive procurement.
