Statement of Work (SOW) / Performance Work Statement (PWS)

The Geology, Energy, and Minerals Science Center (GEMSC) requires clumped isotope geochemical analyses of carbonate mineral samples to support projects studying energy and minerals resources and related geologic processes. The analyses will be used for data releases, USGS publications, and peer-reviewed scientific journal articles.

This is a five-year Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) contract with a not-to-exceed value of $49,000.00. The contractor will perform clumped isotopic compositions (D47 and D48) and/or stable carbon (d13C) and oxygen isotopic compositions (d18O) analyses on carbonate mineral samples. Preference is given to laboratories capable of analyzing small samples (<500µg) with high precision instruments and semi-automated digestion/analysis units. The laboratory must be able to analyze calcite, dolomite, and magnesite samples. If unable to analyze magnesite powders directly, instruments must be capable of analyzing CO2 gas from sealed glass ampules prepared by the USGS.

• Data must be calibrated using InterCarb ETH standards and measured alongside "check standards."

• Data must be corrected for acid fractionation and reported according to accepted InterCarb research community standards, standardized to the carbon dioxide equilibrium scale (I-CDES90).

• Temperature data should be reported based on accepted D47-temperature calibrations (e.g., Anderson et al., 2021).

• For each sample, measurements must be replicated on at least 3 separate analysis sessions.

• Sample replicate-level and sample summary-level results, along with standard measurement quality data, must be reported.

• Sample level data uncertainty must be reported as the 95% confidence interval of the mean (internal and external error).

• If the D47 internal standard error exceeds 0.04‰ after 3 replicates, additional replicates are required if sample material remains.

• Data and supporting summary reports must be sent to the USGS within 6 months (180 days) of sample shipment.

• Data found unacceptable will be re-analyzed at no cost to the government.

• Period of Performance: 02/13/2026 – 02/12/2031.

• Place of Performance: Analyses must occur in a specialized isotope geochemical laboratory within the United States. No third-party vendors or subcontracting are permitted.

• The Principal Investigator (PI) must hold a doctorate in geochemistry or have 5+ years of experience in clumped isotope analysis, with a history of high-precision publications.

• The primary operator/analyzer should have at least one year of experience with geologic samples, with a preference for advanced degrees (MS/MA or PhD) and capabilities in data analysis, standardization, summarization, and transmission.
