Qualification Details

Fit reasons
  • NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
  • Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
  • Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
  • Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps

Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.

Quick Summary

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has issued a Special Notice / Notice of Intent to award a sole-source purchase order to Geotek Limited for a microXRF geochemistry sensor. This sensor is required to integrate with the USGS's existing Geotek MSCL-XZ (Mark II) core logging system for high-resolution, non-destructive elemental analyses. While this is a notice of intent for a sole-source award, all responsible parties may submit a quotation for consideration. Responses are due by May 13, 2026, at 1700 PST.

Scope of Requirement

The microXRF sensor will be installed on the USGS Geology, Minerals, Energy, & Geophysics Science Center's (GMEGSC) Geotek MSCL-XZ-II Joint Hyperspectral Analyzer Work Station (JHAWS) at Moffett Field, CA. It must provide rapid, spatially precise geochemical analyses of soft-sediment and hard-rock core materials, with full compatibility and integration with the existing JHAWS platform. Key technical specifications include:

  • Element Detection Range: Al to U.
  • X-ray Source: 4 kV to 50 kV, 15 W sealed Rh or Mo target.
  • Detector: Large-area SDD detector with spectral resolution of ≥133 eV at Mn Kα.
  • Precision Stage Movement: Down-core collimation ≥0.5 mm; cross-core collimation ≥5 mm.
  • Measurement Cell: Helium-flushed, capable of quantifying low-energy elements.
  • Software: Full control of X-ray settings, spectral analysis, calibration, and element concentration mapping.

Installation and integration will be performed on-site by Geotek technicians, including training for USGS personnel. The existing JHAWS instrument will not be sent back to the manufacturer.

Contract Details

  • Opportunity Type: Special Notice / Notice of Intent
  • NAICS Code: 334516, Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing
  • Product Service Code: 6640, Laboratory Equipment And Supplies
  • Set-Aside: None specified (Sole Source Intent)
  • Award Basis: Sole source to Geotek Limited, as they are identified as the only source capable of meeting the required technical specifications and integration with existing equipment. Future similar requirements will be competed.
