Quick Summary

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), under the Department of Defense, has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for its AI Forge Program. This RFI seeks to identify the Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities and research areas of interest of U.S. universities to inform a program focused on high-impact, fast-paced, university-led fundamental AI research for national security. Responses are due by June 22, 2026, at 5:00 PM ET.

Purpose & Scope

The AI Forge Program, a collaboration between DARPA, NSF, and NIST, aims to solve "Critical AI Challenges for National Security" through university-led research. The RFI specifically targets capabilities in AI interpretability, AI control, and adversarial robustness. This RFI is for planning purposes only and does not constitute a formal solicitation.

Key Requirements / Deliverables

Universities are requested to provide information on:

  • University Overview: POCs, research entities, faculty, facilities, computing infrastructure.
  • Research Capabilities: Ability to support Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and classified research.
  • Contracting Processes: Internal processes for rapid contracting and subaward onboarding.
  • Past Performance: Research achievements relevant to AI interpretability, AI control, and adversarial robustness.
  • Partnerships: Existing national security partnerships, DIB integration, scaling/acceleration agents, and technology transition track record.
  • Expression of Interest: Ranking and rationale for interest in the program's strategic thrusts.

Contract Details

The AI Forge program intends to execute "Project Ventures," which are high-risk, high-reward, university-led efforts. These ventures are anticipated to range from $750K to $3M or higher and span up to one year. DARPA expects to award several Project Ventures annually. Intellectual Property (IP) generated is intended to be shared under liberal open-source licensing.

Submission & Evaluation

  • Responses Due: June 22, 2026, 5:00 PM ET.
  • Format: Submissions must be unclassified, use the provided template, and not exceed eight (8) pages.
  • Review: Responses will be disclosed to AI Forge forum stakeholders for technical review and program development.

Eligibility / Set-Aside

  • Target Audience: U.S. universities.
  • Personnel: Key personnel are anticipated to be limited to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • Submission: Universities must submit a single, unified response authorized by a Vice President for Research, Provost, or equivalent.
  • Set-Aside: None specified, as this is an RFI for market research.

Additional Notes

Responses are voluntary, and DARPA will not reimburse costs incurred. DARPA may conduct individual discussions with respondents based on their submissions.
