Next steps
Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.
Quick Summary
The Naval Air Weapons Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) China Lake is conducting a Sources Sought for market research purposes to identify potential sources for an Automated Fiber Placement Thermoplastic Processing Head. This effort is intended as a sole-source procurement from Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Albany, Inc., but other capable firms are encouraged to respond. The head will be fully compatible with an existing Trelleborg XTS-400 AFP system. Responses are due June 22, 2026.
Scope of Work
The requirement is for a Thermoplastic Fiber Placement (TPFP) Head that is fully compatible with the NAWCWD Composites Engineering Laboratory's existing Trelleborg XTS-400 Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) system. The head must be interchangeable with the currently configured thermoset processing head and enable the fabrication of composite parts using thermoplastic resins, expanding current capabilities. Key specifications include:
- Compatibility: Full hardware, software, electrical, and mechanical compatibility with the Trelleborg XTS-400 AFP system.
- Interchangeability: Seamless interchangeability with the existing thermoset processing head.
- Processing: Designed to process a single ¼" slit tape of thermoplastic material.
- Heat Source: Utilizes a hot gas torch (250-975°C, 50-100 SLPM nitrogen flow), with a future upgrade path to laser processing.
- Compaction: Up to 150 lbs. force via an unheated stainless steel roller.
- Ancillaries: Includes an arm-mounted material creel with a backing tape removal system.
- Control: Closed-loop control and monitoring for material feed, cut, clamp, compaction load, and torch temperature.
- Deliverables: TPFP Head, feed motor/cable set, umbilical assembly, electrical/software updates, bench test results, manuals, and wiring diagrams. Installation and 1-3 days of on-site training are also required.

Evaluation
Responses will be used for market research to determine if any other companies can meet the agency's requirements. This is not a request for competitive proposals.
Additional Notes
Interested parties are encouraged to submit a written response, including a capability statement detailing experience, assets, and ability to perform the work. Firms should also provide company size (Small or Large business according to NAICS 3695) and specify any small business designations (SDVOSB, HUBZone, 8(a), WOSB, EDWOSB). A Cyber Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 1 (FCI Self) is anticipated; rationale for disagreement or recommended CMMC level should be provided. Comments and recommendations regarding the attached draft Performance Work Statement (PWS) are also welcome.
