Qualification Details

Fit reasons
  • NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
  • Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
  • Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
  • Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps

Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.

Quick Summary

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is conducting a Sources Sought to identify potential sources for an Electromagnet Power Supply and Control System. This market research aims to find commercial products/services to replace an end-of-life power supply unit for precision measurements in magnetic thin films and magnetoresistive random access memory technologies. Responses are sought from all responsible sources, including large and small businesses. Capability statements are due by June 5, 2026.

Background & Requirement

NIST's Functional Nanostructured Materials Group requires a new electromagnet power supply system to continue using a commercial H-frame electromagnet. The current 12 kW, 200V, 60A power supply has reached its end of life. The new system must deliver current-regulated power with high stability for precision measurements.

The required system includes:

  • One bipolar current-regulated power supply unit (at least 12 kW output power, 200V output voltage, 60A output current) with zero-crossing continuity.
  • Long-term current drift less than 50 ppm over 8 hours and less than 5 ppm per degree Celsius.
  • Serial or ethernet control with integral conversion to better than 18 bits and digitization to better than 24 bits.
  • Water cooling and three-phase, 208V power input.
  • A digital Teslameter/Gaussmeter with +/-0.01% accuracy and at least three measurement ranges, highest at least 3.0 Tesla.
  • A Hall Effect probe with a 4m cable, temperature compensated (10°C to 30°C).
  • Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID)-based regulation of power supply current using the Hall effect probe.
  • A mounting bracket for a Bruker ER 074 electromagnet.
  • An instructions manual including Python programming commands for control.

Response Instructions

Interested parties should submit a written capability statement addressing:

  1. Company details (name, address, UEI, CAGE, POC).
  2. Business size and socio-economic status for NAICS 335999 (All Other Miscellaneous Electrical Equipment and Component Manufacturing, 600 employees size standard).
  3. Description of relevant company capabilities and prior experience.
  4. Identification of applicable contract vehicles.
  5. Manufacturing location (United States or other country).

Submission Details

  • Format: Microsoft Word or PDF, maximum 12 pages, Times New Roman 11-point font, 1-inch margins.
  • Submission Email: Sadaf.Afkhami@nist.gov
  • Response Due: June 5, 2026, 12:00 PM EST
  • Questions Due: May 27, 2026, 9:00 AM EST (submit to Sadaf.Afkhami@nist.gov)
