Fit reasons
- NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
- Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
- Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
- Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps
Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.
Quick Summary
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has issued a Special Notice combining a Sources Sought and Notice of Intent to Sole Source for a Galvanometer Scanner System. NIST intends to award a firm-fixed price purchase order to ScanLab America Inc. for this system, citing unique compatibility requirements with their existing Laser Processing and Metrology Testbed (LPDT). Responses from interested parties are due by May 14, 2026.
Scope of Work
The required galvanometer scanner system must meet specific technical specifications, including:
- Galvo acceleration >= 160,000 rad/s^2
- Galvo speed > 2000 mm/s
- Control interface: digital, XY2-100 or SL2-100 equivalent
- Positioning resolution >= 20 bits
- Repeatability (RMS) < 0.4 µrad
- Position encoder: digital
- Maximum allowed average laser power: 1000 W
- Dynamic focusing unit for optical z-axis positioning
- F-theta lenses for planar image plane focusing
- Camera adapter for coaxial imaging
- PC interface board and software
Background & Purpose
NIST's Production Systems Group (PSG) conducts research in metals-based additive manufacturing (AM) using the Laser Processing and Metrology Testbed (LPDT). An additional, identical ScanLab scanner is needed to enable dual-laser operation and enhance thermal gradient control, ensuring deterministic synchronization and preserving existing calibration. NIST states that ScanLab is the only manufacturer capable of supplying a fully compatible scanner.
