Quick Summary
The Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane, on behalf of USSOCOM, is seeking innovative solutions for a Flyweight Assault Machine Gun (FAMG). This initiative aims to replace the aging MK46 series with a lightweight, man-portable, belt-fed 5.56x45mm weapon system. This is an Area of Interest (AOI) under a Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO), potentially leading to an Other Transaction (OT) agreement for prototype development and subsequent production. White papers are due June 18th, 2026, by 12:00 PM EDT.
Purpose & Scope
USSOCOM requires a technically superior, lightweight, man-portable, belt-fed 5.56x45mm weapon to replace the MK46 series. The FAMG must integrate advancements in material, manufacturing, and technology to enhance operator effectiveness in shooting, maneuvering, and suppressive fire, with improved recoil. The system must be interoperable with USSOCOM's Visual Augmentation Systems and Weapon Accessories (VASWA).
Key Performance Parameters (KPPs) include:
- Maximum weight: <= 11.5 lbs (goal 10 lbs).
- Maximum length: <= 39 inches (goal 35 inches).
- Safety selector: Safe/Automatic preferred, or Safe/Automatic/Semi-Automatic acceptable.
- Class I Mean Round Between Stoppages (MRBS): >= 1,400 rounds (goal 2,000+).
- Class I Mean Round Between Essential Function Failure (MRBF): >= 1,800 rounds.
- Class II or III MRBF: >= 15,000 rounds.
- Effective range: >= 500m for area targets.
Key Secondary Attributes (KSAs) include:
- Dispersion: <= 10 MOA (single-shot) / <= 11 MOA (burst) at 100m.
- Functionality in extreme temperatures (-20°F to +165°F).
- Capability to fire 5.56x45mm linked and high-pressure ammunition.
- Quick-change barrel (<= 30 seconds).
- Extensive MIL-STD 1913 picatinny rail and M-LOK slots.
- Compatibility with various optics and aiming devices.
- High mean round receiver and barrel life (100,000 / 15,000 rounds respectively).
- Low recoil impulse, rapidly deployable bipod, training conversion kit.
- Ammunition storage for >= 100 linked rounds, cyclic rate 400-650 rpm, left-hand feeding support.
- Safety features (obstructed bore, rough handling) and integration capabilities (pintle/swing arm mounts).
Contract & Submission Process
This opportunity operates under the NSWC Crane Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO) N0016425SC0001. The process involves three phases:
- Phase I – White Papers: Submissions must include estimated cost per weapon, prototype delivery timeline, technical risks, and images. A minimum Technical Readiness Level (TRL) of 7 is required. White papers are limited to 5 pages (12-point font) or 15 PowerPoint slides, excluding coversheets and pictures.
- Phase II – Pitch Day: Selected proposers will participate in a virtual pitch day (<= 30 minutes, including Q&A).
- Phase III – Request for Prototype Proposal (RPP): Aligns with the original CSO.
A successful prototype Other Transaction (OT) agreement may lead to a follow-on production contract without further competitive procedures, as per 10 U.S.C. 4022(f).
Eligibility Requirements
To enter into a prototype OT agreement, at least one of the following conditions must be met:
- At least one nontraditional defense contractor or nonprofit research institution participating significantly.
- All significant participants are small businesses or nontraditional defense contractors.
- At least one-third of the total prototype project cost is paid by non-Federal sources.
