Quick Summary

The Marine Corps Installations, National Capital Region - Regional Contracting Office (MCINCR-RCO), on behalf of the National Museum of the Marine Corps (NMMC), is conducting a Request for Information (RFI) for market research. This RFI seeks industry feedback for the salvage, recovery, and transportation of one M4A3 Sherman tank (s/n 50296) and the salvage of usable parts from a second M4A3 Sherman tank (s/n 62179). Both tanks are located at Marine Corps Base Twentynine Palms, California, with the recovered tank and salvaged parts to be transported to the NMMC's Museum Support Facility in Dumfries, Virginia. Responses are due by May 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM EST.

Scope of Work

The requirement involves:

  • Salvage, recovery, and transportation of one M4A3 Sherman tank (s/n 50296). This requires a crane (120-ton or larger) and an RGN semi-trailer truck. The tank is structurally intact with surface corrosion, not mobile, but lifting lugs are functional.
  • Salvage of usable parts from a second M4A3 Sherman tank (s/n 62179). Specific parts include track runs, bogey trucks, a bulldozer mount, idler wheel, and drive sprockets. The NMMC TPOC will determine salvageability on-site, and the hull will remain at Twentynine Palms.
  • Palletization and boxing of all salvaged parts with steel banding.
  • Transportation of the recovered tank and parts to Dumfries, VA. Contractor is responsible for blocking, bracing, and securement. A crane is required from the vendor at the delivery location for unloading. Delivery must be arranged during regular business hours (M-F 0730-1600). No security escort is needed, but the tank must be tarped and hatches covered.
  • Environmental considerations include lead-based paint and minimal petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POLs) in the transmission/final drive housing. UXO risk has been mitigated. Tracks are buried under a few inches of loose sand.
  • A written work plan and transportation plan must be submitted within two weeks post kick-off, with delivery within 90 days of contract award.

Contract & Timeline

  • Type: Request for Information (RFI) for market research purposes. The Government intends to award a Firm-Fixed Price (FFP) contract.
  • NAICS/PSC: The Government is considering NAICS 488510 (Freight Transportation Arrangement) and PSC V119 (Other Cargo And Freight Services).
  • Response Due: May 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM EST.
  • Published: May 21, 2026 (updated).
