Quick Summary

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), under the Department of Commerce, is seeking proposals for the Procurement of a Quadruped Manipulator Robot. This is a Total Small Business Set-Aside opportunity. The robot will support NIST's Measurement Science for Robotics and Autonomous Systems program in Gaithersburg, MD. Responses are due by June 30, 2026.

Scope of Work

NIST requires one (1) new, non-experimental, non-prototype quadruped robot with an integrated manipulator arm. The robot will be used to develop and validate mobility and manipulation test methods and metrics. The procurement includes the robot, required accessories, accompanying software or API, FOB Destination delivery, installation, a minimum one-year warranty, and on-site training.

Key Requirements

Quadruped Manipulation Robot (Line Item 0001):

  • Integrated Arm: At least 6 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) with an actuated gripper, capable of reaching at least 1800 mm height.
  • Physical & Power: Four legs, central chassis, minimum 90 minutes battery life with hot-swappable batteries and tethered power capability.
  • Sensing: Vision sensor, lidar sensor, central IMU, and joint/actuator sensors (position, force/torque, current).
  • Communication & Control: Internal communication at >= 1000hz, remote operation via controller/tablet or software/API, control rate >= 100hz, integrated mobility and manipulation control with safety guarantees.
  • Capabilities: Robust mobility (walking, balance recovery, obstacle avoidance, stairs, inclines, rough terrain) and arm manipulation (lifting 5kg, dragging 25kg, grasping, valve turning, door opening, pick and place, self-righting). Long-range radio communication is desired.

Software/API (Line Item 0002):

  • Must allow interaction with robot subsystems, viewing code, recording sensor data, custom behavior scripting, utilization of manufacturer controllers, and integration with custom control code.
  • Includes on-site calibration procedures for sensors and supports integration with external sensing systems and time synchronization.
