Scope of Work
This project, titled "TUIN OAKS- Emergency Rehabilitation Approach 2026," aims to correct critical exterior deterioration, stabilize structural elements, improve environmental protection, and conduct targeted investigations for future rehabilitation of Booker T. Washington's home, "The Oaks." The ultimate goal is to ensure the building can safely reopen for public use. Key tasks include:
- Structural Stabilization – Porch Beams: Temporary shoring, replacement of 14 deteriorated 12x12 wood beams, treatment, and repair of beam pockets/fascia.
- Exterior Wood Siding Repair & Replacement: Repair or replace up to 2,500 sq ft of siding, matching original profiles, installing moisture barriers, flashing, and repainting.
- Window & Door Rehabilitation + UV Protective Reglazing: Repair/replace window components (up to 60% of units), reglaze with UV-filtering glass, restore operability, and install weatherstripping.
- Exterior Safety & Visitor Access Preparation: Stabilize flooring, stair rails, thresholds, and trim; install protective barriers; ensure egress pathways meet life-safety requirements.
- Artifact & Interior Protection: Protect furnishings and interiors with museum-standard coverings, coordinating with NPS curatorial staff.
