Quick Summary
The Missile Defense Agency (MDA), under the Department of Defense, has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for Missile Defense System-Next (MDS-Next). This RFI seeks innovative capability solutions for Strategic Architecture Thrust Areas to inform future development and investment in response to the 2035+ threat environment. Responses will guide capability prioritization and potential Program Objective Memorandum (POM) investment decisions.
Purpose & Scope
MDA is executing a strategic planning effort to advance missile defense capabilities. This RFI transitions from identifying strategic focus areas to evaluating solution approaches. The agency is looking for fundamentally different capability constructs, architectures, or operational concepts, rather than incremental improvements. Submissions should focus on capability-level approaches that align with identified Strategic Architecture Thrust Areas, address challenges of the 2035+ threat environment, and demonstrate potential for improved operational effectiveness.
Key Requirements
Respondents should clearly describe:
- The proposed capability or architectural concept and its function.
- How it operates within the broader system.
- How it differs from or improves upon current/planned capabilities.
- Estimated timeline for initial operational fielding and key milestones.
- Applicability across multiple mission areas or threat sets.
- Integration with existing and planned missile defense architectures.
Submissions must address: Strategic Architecture Thrust Area Alignment, Capability Approach, Operational Impact, Technical Feasibility and Maturity (TRL), Cost Considerations (ROM estimate), Integration Considerations, and Small Business Considerations.
Submission Details & Timeline
- Type: Request for Information (Special Notice)
- Submission Format: Concise pitch papers, maximum 5 pages. Clarity of thought and reasoning are valued over presentation style. Avoid general descriptions, marketing material, or platform-centric responses.
- White Paper Submission Deadline: May 15, 2026, 2359 CST.
- Resource Access Deadline: Requests for access to SECRET/CUI briefings and 1:1 technical exchanges must be received by May 14, 2026, 1200 CST.
- 1:1 Technical Exchanges: Anticipated between April 27, 2026, and May 22, 2026. Exchanges after May 15, 2026, will be for informational purposes only.

Eligibility & Notes
While no formal set-aside is specified, the government is seeking to understand the capability of small businesses to contribute to the Strategic Architecture Thrust Areas and inform potential future acquisition strategies. Small businesses are requested to describe their relevant capabilities, unique contributions, and role in teaming arrangements. Submission of information is voluntary and does not constitute a commitment by MDA.
